Family Planning Program Promotes:

  • Family well-being by allowing couples to time pregnancy when they are best able to care for children.
  • Early detection of health problems including high blood pressure, breast & cervical cancer, and sexually transmitted infections.

Program History:

  • Federal program (Title X) established in 1970 to ensure access to family planning and reproductive health services to low income, uninsured women and teens.
  • Of 7,000 Family Planning clinics in the U.S., 4,500 receive Title X funding
  • Sixy percent (60%) of Family Planning clinics are run by state, county, or local health departments.
  • Each year, Title X supported clinics enable 1 million couples to avoid unintended pregnancy
  • Every dollar spent for Family Planning services save $3 in Medical costs for pregnancy-related and newborn care

  • Full range of Contraceptive Options (pills, injectables, patch, barriers, NFP)
  • Health Screening (blood pressure evaluations, breast exams, pelvic exams, pap tests, sexually transmitted infection testing & treatment.

Note: Abortion funding explicitly prohibited since 1970.

Local Impact:

About 2,400 client served per year

  • 97% female / 3% male
  • 32% teens
  • 72% qualify for free services
  • Over 300 visits for emergency contraception
  • About 75 women per year with irregular screening results are referred to physcicians
  • Lower teen pregnancy rates
  • Families are better able to care for children
  • Early detection for serious health problems
