Free Quit Smoking Counseling For Moms in Delta County

Pregnant women and parents with children in the home can now receive free help to quit smoking, thanks to a grant received from the Community Foundation of Delta County. "A Great Smoke Free Start" is a free program providing individualized counseling with a trained American Lung Association Freedom From Smoking counselor. Those enrolled will receive a Quit Workbook, support material, personalized quit plan, and incentives such as nicotine replacement products and gift cards.

Babies whose mothers smoke during pregnancy are at increased risk of:

  • premature birth
  • stillbirth
  • low birth weight
  • underdeveloped lungs

Mom

Children whose mothers smoked while pregnant are at increased risk of:

  • asthma
  • allergies
  • developmental delays
  • learning disorders

In addition, the rate of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is much higher among families that smoke and mothers who smoke during pregnancy.

Children who are exposed to secondhand smoke are at increased risk of:

  • bronchitis
  • pneumonia
  • respiratory symptoms, including cough, phlegm, wheezing, and breathlessness
  • ear infections
