Smoke-Free Affordable Housing |
![]() |
| PHDM received federal funding to help affordable apartments and housing in our communities go smoke-free. Studies have shown that up to 65% of air within a building is shared within the units. This means that you are still at risk of exposure to cigarette smoke (a known cancer causing agent) from your neighbors, even if you and your family do not smoke in the home. |

Michigan will be Smoke Free on May 1, 2010
On December 18, 2009, Gov. Granholm signed Public Act 188 making Michigan the 38th smokefree state in the country. Michigan will be able to breathe smokefree air beginning May 1, 2010. The new legislation will protect workers at most workplaces and any food service establishment employing at least one person. This includes restaurants, bars, shopping malls, bowling alleys, mechanic shops, health facilities, VFW halls and private clubs. Outdoor seating areas at restaurants and bars are also included in the law. Smoking will be permitted on the gaming floors of Detroit's three casinos, but every bar, restaurant, hotel room, conference center and lobby outside of the gaming floor will be smokefree. The law does not cover Native American casinos as state law does not govern them. Existing cigar bars that derive at least 10 percent of their revenue from cigar sales may allow smoking. Tobacco specialty shops can allow smoking if 75 percent of sales are from tobacco products. These shops can not serve food or drink. Visit www.michigan.gov/smokefreelaw to find more detailed information about the law (including several exemptions) and frequently asked questions.
Coalition Members Needed
The Community Tobacco Reduction Coalition is an alliance of individuals and local organization representatives who focus on reducing tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure in our community. There are two committees, one serving Escanaba and Delta County, and the other held in partnership with Marinette County. If you are a health advocate, a business owner, someone who has been personally affected by tobacco, or just interested in reducing the dangers of exposure to tobacco, please consider joining us. Contact Kim Harris, (906)789-8105 (kharris@phdm.org). You can choose to serve on the Committee in varying degrees--as a regulary attending member (monthly meetings), and/or as a partner to keep updated and help us on occasion with relevant activities. We hope to hear from you!
