HIV prevention education counesling and testing is an effective method in reducing the spread of HIV and AIDS diseases.
Population Served:
- Those considered to be at High Risk for the disease
- Public Safety Or Health Care workers exposed through performance of work duties
- Court Ordered Testing for Criminal Sexual Offenders (victims receive results)
Services:
- Anonymous Counseling & Testing by State Certified HIV Counselors
- Risk Assessment & Testing for HIV and Other Communicable Diseases
- Referrals to Other Programs, e.g. Alcohol & Other Drug Services, STD, Family Planning, Immunizations, Mental Health, and Violence & Abuse Services
- Prevention and Risk Reduction Education Activities
- HIV/AIDS Education Provided to High Schools Students Upon Request

Program History:
- CDC Program started in 1981
- Tests develooped for HIV infection in 1985
- Michigan began HIV Surveillance Program in 1988
Local Impact:
- Michigan estimates 15,500 currently infected with HIV/AIDS - 20 cases in Delta & Menominee Counties (about 1/3 the prevalence rate of some downstate counties)
- Public Health tests approxmiately 200 people each year
- Preventing even one HIV infection will result in an annual savings of $16,300 in health care dollars.
