VFC Eligibility Requirements

  • Enrolled in Medicaid
  • No Health Insurance
  • Under a health insurance plan that does not cover any of the cost of vaccines
  • Under a health insurance plan but have exceeded the annual cap for preventive care
  • Are American Indian or Alaskan Native

Requirements for Assessing School-aged Children

Since the fall of 2002, schools in Michigan are required to assess and report the immunization status of all 6th grade students, in addition to the new school entrants, including kindergartners, whom they continue to assess.

All 6th graders must have documentation showing they have had the following immunizations:

  • Two (2) doses of MMR
  • Three (3) doses of Hepatits B
  • Completed series of DTap/Td with one dose in the last 10 years
  • Three (3) doses of Polio
  • One (1) does of Varicella or history of chickenpox

This requirement will help assure school-aged children are up-to-date and protected against vaccine-preventable diseases.

Reasons to be concerned about immunization status of children in this age group:

  • Vaccine-preventable diseases are still with us. In many cases they may cause disability or death.
  • Hepatitis B is the most common cause of liver cancer in the U.S. Approximately 90% of the newly reported casees each year are in adolescents and young adults.
  • Varicella vaccine is recommended for children and adolescents who have not had the chickenpox (varicella) disease. Complications from chickenpox are much higher in persons over 13 years of age.
  • According to a 1999 report, only 52% of U.S. adolescents enrolled in health plans are fully immunized.
